Lonely City Girl

Lonely City Girl

A Poem by Audrey Bruckner

Delicate to a T

shining under street lamps and porch lights

glancing at spinning tires, passing cars

harsh breath warming the night air

feeling guilty for the way,

she thinks, she feels, she missed

'cause if the past can't be erased

how can mistakes truly be forgotten

sometimes apologies come too late

and the desired forgiveness is lost with the pulse

puddles reflecting her sorrowful eyes

shatter with every raindrop

a constant reminder of opportunities lost

disappointment hiding in the eyes of close friends,

and pushed away family

the same eyes that burn through the guilt

to the regret in her heart

how does one say sorry

for permanently breaking a heart?

How does one fix destroyed wishes?

can it even be done?

the answers may never be known

at least not to this lonely city girl
