Writing Poetry

A Poem by Jamie Lee
"

The joy of writer's block

"

I watch the flourescent white window,

beaming brightly beneath a blinking cursor,

taunting me to fill its space with

colorful images and clever metaphors,

while I sit like an invalid

staring with my eyes glazed over

until I notice the single corn-nut residing on my

otherwise spotless white rug

and my nostrils flare at the thought of

its grease tainting my flawless floor,

yet inspiration occurs!

I type furiously not wanting to forget

the picture that has developed in my

migraine-ridden, mangled brain

until I realize how stupid my so-called

"inspiration" sounds as I

read it aloud from the white window,

that now as I stare is much to bright

and is irritating me more than the corn-nut.

So I rip free the charger that filled my

mocking laptop with its haunting glow

and grin triumphantly when it dims to

a subtle shadow, not forgetting the

culprit of my initial irritation,

I lunge for the corn-nut and quickly

smash it between my thumb and forefinger

before disposing of its remains in my

overflowing waste-basket, wishing my

creativity was as bloated as the garbage.

That was AMAZING and made me laugh. Niiice. Creative, which is surprising since it's about writer's block, and I have felt this way numerous times. Too many freaking times. I love the flow, and you have an extremely amazing word choice, and I love the part about unplugging the laptop. Sometimes I feel like punching in my computer screen; ever feel like that? Very nice, and I'll have to get to that book of yours sometime. I imagine if you can write a witty thing like this, then you can write an awesome book. I guess I'll find out when I get to it.

Anywhooo, I love this, and the ending is so true. If only it could be! Though right now my wastebasket is kinda empty.. o.O Love this witty, nicely done poem. (:

Nicely put Jamie. The last line says it all. I often wonder what I'm doing on here trying to be creative when I'm never happy with what I wrote. I feel like I ran out of ideas and I'm just here waiting and nothings happening. LOL Oh well. No one said writing would be easy. Thanks for letting us look into someone else's world and discovering a similar frustration.

I enjoyed the stream of consciousness feel to this. Witty.
Thoughts:
1) "until I realize how stupid my so-called/"inspiration" sounds as I" maybe just "my inspiration". This is just a new pet-peeve for me. I found several poem I wrote 10 years ago and saw I wrote "so-called" and realized how much better of a writer am I when I refrain from using "so-called". I think the same for your poem. It's stronger without.
2) "the garbage." seems awkward. I feel that it ends your poem at the point in your cadence.

Just thoughts.
