Chapter 42

Chapter 42

A Chapter by Jemma Packman

Indigo walk into her parents’ kitchen. Wilson says “Hey, little one.”

Indigo says “Hey, Dad.”

How did your date go?”

Good.”

That’s all I get?”

You’re my dad. I’m not giving you details.”

Oh. I did not mean that. Did that happen?”

Dad!”

So, how is she? Where has she been?”

Ric and Henrietta enter the kitchen. Ric says “Where’s who been?”

Indigo says “An old friend.”

Does she have a name?”

Yes.”

You going to tell me her name?”

Henrietta says “Leave her alone. I want to hear how Friday night went.”

Wilson says “I already asked. All I got was good.”

Well, I know what that means. Did you at least make her work for it?”

Indigo says “Mama!”

Ric says “Who?”

Indigo says “My date Friday was great. Ok?”

Henrietta says “Is she coming today?”

I don’t know. Guess we’ll find out soon.”

Like that is it?”

She’s got enough to deal with. She doesn’t need any pressure from me.”

Like what?”

Come on, Mama. You know I can’t tell you, and if she turns up, please don’t ask her.”

Ric says “Who are you talking about?”

Wilson says “Son, don’t pry in girl talk. Dinner will be ready soon, why don’t you go wash up?”

Fine.”

Ric goes upstairs. Henrietta says “You know he’s going to be here for diner.”

Indigo says “I know. I don’t want him to have a meltdown. At least not yet.”

Wilson says “He’ll know who she is.”

Gaz walks in and says “Is this about me?”

Indigo says “No.”

Wilson says “She hasn’t told Ric who her date was or is.”

Gaz says “Is she coming today?”

Indigo s and says “I asked. Didn’t you invite Priscilla?”

No. Why would I?”

Oh I don’t know, babe.”

Gaz slaps Indigo’s arm. Henrietta says “Gareth, don’t hit your sister. And who’s Priscilla?”

The friend I set him up with. They seemed to bond.”

Gaz says “We did. I like her.”

Wilson says “So when do we get to meet her?”

Let me think about it.”

Indigo says “Did you tell them about your interview?”

Henrietta says “What interview?”

Gaz says “Coach position at the high school.”

Wilson says “Congratulations.”

It’s an interview. I haven’t got the job.”

Lexi walks in with Summer and says “Look who I found pacing on the door step. I think she was about to run away.”

When you’ve got a skill, use it.” Gaz puts his arm around Summer’s shoulders. “Wish you wouldn’t use that one though.”

Summer says “That your way of saying you missed me?”

You won’t let me show you.”

Indigo says “Neither will I, and I doubt Priscilla would approve.”

She could join?”

Summer says “If you weren’t involved and Lexi was, then sure.”

Lexi hits Summer in the back of the head. Indigo says “Really?”

I wouldn’t want to share you.”

Wilson says “Good save.”

Henrietta says “Still a smooth talker I see.”

Summer says “I’m being honest, that’s all.”

Lexi says “So you’d share me?”

You’d actually consider it?”

No.”

Then don’t be mad.”

Wilson says “Come on, kids. Dinner’s ready.” Lexi, Gaz and Henrietta take a seat at the table. “Girls, looks like you’re helping me. You know the drill.”

Wilson takes a couple of bowls to the table. Indigo says “Were you really pacing outside?”

Summer says “Yeah. I was nervous.”

About seeing my parents?”

Summer nods. “Stupid, right?”

No, I get it. What made you decide to stay?”

Lexi.”

Wilson comes back, gets the meat and says “You two are still no help. You’ve got two minutes.”

Wilson goes back to the table. Indigo says “Lexi made you stay?” Summer nods. “How?”

Summer says “With her own unique persuasion technique.”

Hit you and dragged you in the house?”

So hard. But I’m glad she did.”

Indigo puts her arms around Summer’s neck. “Me too.”

Indigo kisses Summer as Ric comes down the stairs. Ric says “Who are you?”

Indigo moves back. “Ric, this is…”

Summer holds out her hand and says “Rosie.”

Ric looks at Summer’s hand and says “Have we met?”

Briefly, a long time ago.”

Gaz walks over and says “Guys, come on. I’m not allowed to eat until we’re all say down, so hurry up.”

Indigo says “We’re coming. I was just introducing Ric to Rosie.”

Rosie?”

Yes.”

Summer says “Never been good with names, have you? At least not girls’ names.”

Gaz says “No. I remember other things about them. Right now you’re keeping a hungry man from his father’s cooking. Not good. Let’s go. Ric, Pop’s letting you carve.”

Ric and Gaz go to the table. Indigo says “You ok?”

Summer says “Sure.”

So, Rosie?”

I remember how much he hates me. I was trying to keep the drama to a minimum.”

Indigo kisses Summer. “You’re amazing.”

Who have you been talking to?”

Moxie, and I do have some experience myself.”

Keep inflating my ego and I may not be able to get out of the door.”

If that’s what it takes to keep you from leaving, I better start thinking of nice things to say about you.”

Summer kisses Indigo. “You have to think of nice things?”

Wilson shouts “Girls, that’s more than two minutes. Don’t make me send Lexi to get you.”

That’s enough of a threat for me.”

Indigo says “Me too. Come on.”

Indigo leads Summer to the table and sits down.
