The Sandwich Eaters

The Sandwich Eaters

A Poem by JR

4:02 am - I have woken up, I am making coffee, this house is very quiet and dark and I’m gathering myself to write

4:07 am - It occurs to me what I’m really doing is building a sandwich, two plain slices of bread that are my pain, s**t for my meat, all my grief, my loss, my disappointment, and my fear

4:11 am - I have been eating sandwiches, one after another, for as long as I can remember, back to back, my belly is always full of bread and s**t, taste is bitter, worse than coffee

4:16 am - Maybe if I’m doing this, everyone is doing this, maybe they are all sandwich eaters, everyone is the same under their skin, everyone has the bread of pain and the s**t of the void within as meat

4:20 am - I am sure of it, we all build our sandwiches, we have no choice, there is a hunger within us like an animal, it keeps clawing at the ground, it keeps eating and shitting and making a meal for itself

4:23 am - I have finished my spread, I am writing my work, I am breathing in the dark, I realize we all must starve ourselves of this habit, we cannot build sandwiches, we can be free and clean, I will stop

4:25 am - I am starting to build my next sandwich…
