Life

Life

A Poem by Julie McCarthy (juliespenhere)

Like an old quilt
We fit
Top sheet tight
Fitted sheet loose
Pillow cases mis matched
Unpaired

We fit
We belong together
No matter the threads bare
The life and sleep - times
Of us together

Years of
Bed hair
Snoring and nightmares
Spilt eggs and toast and
Coffee on crumpled linen

Kids and dogs and cats
No mice
Nappies and lots of lullabies
And midnight feeds
On sore breasts bare

The fights the spats the
Bitchy silences
The walk outs the rumours
Mistrust and affairs
The hard years
The break up and lonely nites

The getting it back together dates
Now it all seems so easy
Whatever we did that was wrong
Back then
Let’s hope we learnt those lesson songs
