for whom the bell tolls

Thanksgiving

 

I eat meat,I enjoy it

But it doesn’t seem right

When millions of turkeys

Never see days' light

 

I can’t do without it

I doubt that I’ll stop

But our meat supply 

Is flawed from the top

 

The thanks we give

For the harvest we reap

Should include

A guilt free nights’ sleep

 

They will die anyhow

Some people say

We’ll also expire

In our terminal way

 

But were we

Treated so foul

There would be no

End to our howl

I feel much the same way. Poor turkeys, cows, pigs, sheep, etc. Why do they have to taste so darned good? The last stanza made me smile.

Nicely penned, John, with plenty of food for thought. Yes, I could probably go without meat too. Actually, I only eat fish and poultry. We were initially designed to be vegetarians anyway, but I'd miss Thanksgiving dinner without turkey.

It is a shame, the way you describe it here, John. As much as I love to cook, I would be just as happy with a meatloaf! It's all about the dessert for me - as long as there's pumpkin pie, I'm a happy camper!

Our neighbor raised a few turkeys some time ago, freerange style, and they mostly ended up in our yard where we discovered what a personable bird they were
Too bad they get eaten
However I saw a program on "TV" about commercially raised turkeys ( and no doubt foul in general) and it was very upsetting
We buy all that type of thing now from responsible producers
All except for pumpkin pie which we will eat no matter how they have been raised' ssppppeeeeccccciiiiiaaaaallllllyyyyyy with whip cream

Lol, oh no, I don't think I could eat one after watching it parade around my neighbors yard. That's a tad disturbing to me. But I totally agree with you on the pumpkin pie. There simply MUST be a dallop of whip cream or cool whip sitting atop that pie. It's a house rule at my dinner table! : )
