Modern Man's Mantra

Modern Man's Mantra

A Poem by kris reed
"

the lies we tell ourselves (2008)

"

Deceive me,

Tell me lies,

I will praise you,

I will protect you.

Punish me,

Enslave me,

I will love you,

I will believe you.

But tell me truth?

I will hate you,

I will fight you,

I will ignore you,

I will abhor you.

Be honest,

I will make you an outcast,

I will preach against your life,

I will see your end.

Do I want accountability?

I want to be caged,

Tell me what to do.

I don’t want to be responsible for my happiness,

I’d rather leave it up to you.

It is better to be caged

And lack responsibility,

Than it is to be free,

And master of my fate.

What would I do with freedom?

Tell me what I want to hear

And I will give you my life.

Give me freedom,

And I will cut out your heart.

I am sad,

I am angry,

I am scarred,

I am hateful.

I am mad,

I am lonely,

I am fearful,

I am pain.

I am a coward,

I am a liar,

I am a cheat,

I am suffering…

But thank Society I’m not free.
