Sweet Melissa

Sweet Melissa

A Poem by Bright Ocean Star
"

musings of a swim mom....

"

Sweet Melissa….

Oh, most precious of jewels in a velvet box

Nestled softly amidst secure arms

Treasure beyond all known worth

In this world of economic birth

Your life is planned and scripted fair

Time is scheduled with great care

Academics first and foremost, Lass

Laps in the pool fulfill the last…

Evening hours come up all too fast….

No time for silly, willy girly haunts

With friends or boys or nasty taunts

Competition keeps you straight

Keeps the boys at good arms’ length

Training daily shields you, child

Dangers of drink and drugs most wild

For this is why you swim each day

This was my plan, I will say

Boys are unwelcome, unwanted even

Boys are trouble, Even Stephen

You work hard each and every day

Swimming, stroking, flipping, turning

Dropping time amid the burning

Of muscle strain and leg pain

azur springs and waves of blue

strokes are practiced until true

muscles toned, a conscious act

to perform your best, it is a fact

When you race, you fly lane center

Ripples form and waves surrender

Distance is your tour de force

Strength is wrought; endurance source

Center lane dominance is no trouble

Leaves them choking on your bubbles

Happy I am that you dwell with me

Happy I am that you swim so free

Happy I am that you swell with pride

Claim your ribbon and dance and slide….

So beautiful makes me think of my school days :)

It was God Studies family friends never trusted boys they
were chasing after me I wanted nothing to do with them
I was and am a good girl and was a virgin and I wasn't giving that away.

And I simply love swimming I did it as
P.E. class for a long time in high school
in Iowa and I was his best student but if
I did Olympic Swimming races not sure my
family would get me there on time :(

I wanted to do Olympic track running
for a long time and I could do Track I was
good just never signed up as I was so busy
with my own family and schooling.

Such a beautiful piece thank you for sharing
and for your kind review and comments left on my
page.

Blessings. Benita

I LOVE this--having been a swimmer myself--I never ventured too far past a novice competitor, but both my siblings were swimmers too--and as a "wild" older sister, I was pleased in their productive pursuits! Excellent write--beautiful penning by an obviously devoted and talented mother!

This is actually a very deep piece. It beams with pride, and also self awareness and a little angst over how hard it is strike that balance between wanting a child to succeed but worrying they are being pushed too hard ... a nice write.

We want to keep them....always safe...always so close. Mine is now an adult and still I want to pull her back. It was very hard to let her go her own path. I had hoped she would make all the right choices...then she told me .....Mom, I have to make mistakes or how will I ever learn....I 'll stumble ...but I promise. I 'll get back up! Beautiful poem!

It was not easy but I realized that if i tried to make her stay I would lose her.
she sounds like a really great kid, one to make a parent so proud...

i'd like to see her have a little fun though...she can still be dedicated but balanced.

but then...Olympics in the future? it happens this way.

Quite a tribute from a proud and dedicated parent. An avid swimmer myself, I truly enjoyed this. I also enjoyed this as a parent. I just taught my daughter how to swim, so this resonated with me a lot. Truly a heartfelt piece with a unique topic. Great write.
