Death Visited Me Last Night

Death Visited Me Last Night

A Poem by Lee Foreman
"

A story about the first visit from Death

"
Last night I was sleeping peacefully in my bed,
when I heard this low murmuring cry that was sad.
I woke up and no one but me was there,
I fell back to sleep not getting scared.

As I drifted off into my deep sleep,
I heard the cry again and this time it was me.
As I opened my eyes I saw a tall man dressed in black,
A normal human face he did lack.

I laid in my bed scared as he stood over me.
The man grabbed my hand and said "Come with me."
I touch his hand; it was so empty and cold,
I noticed my age turned eternity old.

I walked past the mirror and looked at myself;
I had no face with a black veil and dress.
Death told me I looked beautiful and I was his escort,
I felt like I was going to some outing of some sort.

We walked outside hand in hand,
Everything was cold and black, even the land.
We walked quietly to his black carriage and horse,
he helped me in it; this carriage was cursed.

We started our way to an endless journey,
No one but me and Death, I started to get lonely.
Death noticed this and told me not to worry,
He told me in a minute I will not be lonely.

He put his arm around me and I became stiff and cold,
My body had shut down and has taken its toll.
We pulled up to this gathering that was in an outdoor field,
He said "At this prom you get no meal."

He had me put on a black hooded cloak; he said I had to look elegant;
Across the dark sky flew black crying pelicans.
We walked up to the prom and the banner read "CEMETERY",
I questioned him, "Where in the world are you taking me?"

He looked at me and smiled a faceless grin,
Another faceless woman dressed in black said, "Come on in."
When I walked in, there was no laughing, joking or dancing at all,
Tombstones and other faceless people is all that I saw.

They were dressed in black not making a sound.
They all looked at me and started walking around.
Death looked at me and said, "Let's find our spot shall we?"
I looked over the field and saw a girl that looked just like me.

We finally came to our destination and stopped,
I saw a bench tomb with my name at the top.
I looked at my tomb and cried tearless tears,
Death said, "I have waited for you all these years!"

He took my hand and said, "I told you you weren't going to be alone."
He laid down beside me and said, "Welcome home."

Death is always a good topic. The mystery of death allowed us to create a interesting tale like you did. I like the flow of thoughts and the surprise ending. Thank you for sharing the excellent poetry.
