On Her Own

On Her Own

A Poem by Margie F

The silence had tortured her
The torture had hardened her
She had been strong
Unbelievably strong

His sweet, vulnerable One
Still sweet
Still vulnerable
But different

She never knew he was watching
But he would watch her regularly
Encouraged to see her living
Pierced to see how well, without him

He could tell she sensed him
Scanning the crowd for him
He was there, somewhere
Eventually, she stopped searching

Now, he views her as a stranger
She continues to play
Unaware of his presence
Exercising her independence

In a way, it comforts him
Yet, he never liked the stranger role
Her giggle captures him
So innocent and familiar

What has pleased her
And brought such joy
He won't know
She's too far now to see

He hears voices around her
Giggles and squeals
Ah, she's playing
He's happy she's happy

He turns to leave and looks back
She is so strong, so beautiful
She is her own girl now
Independence looks good on her

this makes me think of a friend, one whose dad was so cold...she wanted to lean on him but he teetered away....now she is happy and strong in her life and marriage...and he sees that....probably makes him proud, but he could never tell her before...and he won't now--
she wants nothing to do with him...so he must watch from afar.

Personal confidence and self-worth takes a long while to build and strengthen - and remember trust is NOT given ...it's earned. Children AND people grow and need to walk their paths.
