Notes from a Midsummer

Notes from a Midsummer

A Poem by Michael Oliver
"

I went to St. Albans our local cathedral city on midsummer's day - these are some observations of events that occured to me while there.

"

The habit the modal blank

An empty eye - empty voice

                 Can you give me  money

                  For some food, for drink

The lie is told “ I’m broke

I need to catch the next bus

He passes beyond , another met

Again the plea -again  the failure

We give as he gives - nothing -

Nothing - nothing for the blank stare

Empty the  monotone request - mirrors empty

                 Us Samaritans thus become pharisees

                                        Envoi

Outside the Vintry garden

                 Light dissolves cream stonework

                 Into a lush dessert

                 Tempts from these shadows

There the Virgin’s violated

 By our faithful rage

Assault leaves blind screams

As petals plucked - shatter

I like capturing the world in various mediums for a long time I was a painter, but more recently I realize the same imperative can be used to direct words as well as brushes. more..
