Deadly Affairs of the Heart

I miss the days of yester-year

The simplicity of childhood

When all we did was laugh and play

And love never got in the way

 

But then we just had to grow up

and our hearts took over control

snuffing out all rationality

like cool breath on a candle flame

 

And here I am

standing next to you,

holding your hand

while secretly, longingly dreaming of him

 

The heart is a cruel mistress,

Her affairs deadly,

And yet humanity can not help but feed off of her sickly sweet ambrosia

Gulping it down like starved beasts

Just so we can feel that butterfly flutter

Deliciously making its way to our core

 

And then while one victim gets their fill,

The other is left thirsty

Continuously wanting more love

That the other will not give

And that is where the heartbreak comes in

The fears and tears,

The feeling of being lost, torn away

From a place you have never really been

It's all a sugar-coated allusion

Until you let God step in

And open your eyes to that one special man

I think what stands out for me is "The heart is a cruel mistress." It reminds me that love can suck, but still we strive to reap the benefits of "love". There is some nice imagery here too.

This is really a thought-provoking piece. Since I tend to linger more on meaning than technical stuff, a lot flowed through my mind reading this. I love how the first three verses are simple, seeming to reflect the innocence you write of, lengthening after things get complicated. We can be so hurt during our instinctive search for a mate. I often question the use of the heart to symbolize lust, since following a true heart can lead to true love, but it's hard to know the difference except in hindsight. There definitely seems to be a Higher Power in play once you find that one person who seems to be your missing half. Lovely poem.

A great poem on the loss of innocence and the disillusionment of love. I especially like the second stanza and your incorporation of ambrosia in the third, very clever and a jack pot of imagery and meaning. This is very, very good. I like your voice as a poet.
