If My Daddy Knew

If My Daddy Knew

A Poem by Midnitefyrfly
"

Written as a tribute on the one year anniversary of the death of my husband and children's father... almost 5 years ago....

"
If My Daddy Knew…

If he knew it would be the last time
that he’d see me fall asleep,
would he tuck me in more tightly
and pray the Lord my soul to keep?

If he knew it would be the last time
that he’d see me walk out the door,
would he give me a hug and kiss
and call me back for  more?

And if my Daddy knew he had to leave
and could never again see me smile,
I know he’d ask for one more minute
to stay and play with me awhile…

My Daddy had to go away from us
because his time was up you see,
but I have time to be with everyone
who means so much to me...

Just in case I might be wrong
and today is all I get,
I'd like to say how much I love you
and hope you don’t forget….

Tomorrow is not promised to you
young or old alike,
and today may be the last chance
I get to hold you tight.

So if you're waiting for tomorrow,
make some time and find a way.
For if tomorrow never comes,
you'll soon regret today...

Regret you didn't take that time
for a smile a hug and a kiss,
and you didn’t give someone
what was their one last wish.

So hold your loved ones close to you
and whisper in their ear,
that you love them very much and
that you hold them dear.

If I could have my Daddy back

I’d love him every day

and I’d never have to wonder

if he knows I feel that way

This is heartbreaking. I never got a chance to say goodbye to my father, so I can relate to this.

Try to spend as much time with your family and friends as possible, because there's always a chance they won't be around tomorrow.

So true. Just remember- "art is long and time is fleeting" The poem will last forever, even when the people we love are long gone.

It is not often that I cry after reading a piece of poetry.

But I did this time.

I don't think I can adequately put to words what I felt while reading this.

The last words my son spoke to me as he went out my door, were I love you Mom. I am so grateful for that. Thank you for sharing. Debileah

Your flow and form were wonderful. The message is strong. The fact that it is writtten from the view point of a child lends it power. Well done.

My favorite parts:

Just in case I might be wrong
and today is all I get,
I'd like to say how much I love you
and hope you don't forget.

So hold your loved ones close to you
and whisper in their ear,
that you love them very much and
that you hold them dear.

If I could have my Daddy back
I'd love him every day
and I'd never have to wonder
if he knows I feel that way

Absolutely loved it....
Im adding this one to one of my favorites...
I know how it feels to leave the one you love, looking at his little face in the airport knowing i wont be back for long. Its really painfull, and i would never want to live it again. I rather die than to have to say bye to my children ever again, i wouldnt trade the world for them. Nothing can compare to their little faces and their little smiles saying i love you dad..
Thanks for sharing and so sorry to hear the pain that you going through.
Hope it gets better,
One!

Fyrfly brings together a wonderful rhyme with a rolling tempo. Her words are sincere, evocative, and down right heart grabbing. The stanzas are all fantastic in an incredible plea to the readers heart. The imagery created is precise and delivered. " If he knew it would be the last time
that he'd see me fall asleep,
would he tuck me in more tightly
and pray the Lord my soul to keep? " Written in the words of a child, developed in the mind of wisdom and put together in the form of a true poet. Fyrfly takes us away on a heart felt journey of a once in a lifetime chance that is only given to us once. A true favorite of mine. Absolute perfection in it's finest form, a tribute.
