The Mirror

Who is this before me?
The familiar face
so like mine.
The years peeling away-
My past self staring at me
"Are you me?" I implore
The blank look in his face
of apathy and distaste
"I don't know who you are."
the response I feared.
A subtle tear rolling
down my paralyzed cheek.
His shaking head-
of disappointment-
turning away from me-
the future-
walking back to the sandbox
building a sand castle
only to have his dreams smashed by the incoming tide.
He knew his fate…
