Fake Plastic Dart Guns.

Fake Plastic Dart Guns.

A Poem by Jason Young

I remember that game
We played when we were young
Carefree and fun
Tagging the other with plastic dart guns

He’d be the general
And I’d be the captain
Boldly declaring my mutiny
For all the world to see

We still play that game-
(Never really outgrew it)
But now it’s played with blood and tears
And instead of fun, we play off the other’s fears

I love how this is a coming of age but also a reflective poem. Being a child, carefree vs being an adult, facing reality and hard choices. And further, being a child and shooting your friends is fun and inconsequential but then, as an adult, shooting your friends is the brutal reality. Well done, I enjoyed reading this and the route you took.

"Boldly declaring my mutiny
For all the world to see"

i liked the line the best... especially with the image of a young boy. even though the topic is harshsounding, it's innocent because he's young. the you turn it on the last verse... and its' sad but true.

What a piece, I enjoyed reading it. Wasn't quite sure where it was going, but once it got to the last stanza it kinda hit me square on the nose. A sad truth, it is. Well, what an interesting and original read, it's great.

PS Thank you again for the WONDERFUL Christmas review!
