Relapse

Relapse

A Poem by Ashley Campbell

I’ll sink in this sand,

Like a folded fan.

Willingly.

I accept defeat.

This same old song and dance,

Naive to think I had a chance.

To leave this in the past.

Where I found it.

Sickened by this hopelessness,

I hope you can forgive me.

Because I just wasn’t strong enough to keep my word.

Just strong enough to fail.

So familiar these words ring,

Of sadness and defeat….

Self-loathing at its best.

I fight tears as these words appear,

These words of my betrayal.

Guilt ridden and ashamed.

Like an addict,

I’ve relapsed.

It's fantastic. "This same old song and dance" This was a great way to start the second stanza. It's a phrase I've heard before, so the familiarity definitely helped me understand what you were going for. Of course, it's not overused, so it's not boringly familiar. Also, I liked how in the same stanza you refer to the matter as "this" and "it" without naming the issue. Being vague in this instance is a good thing.

This poem hurts me. Maybe it's because I know you, or maybe it's because of how heart wrenching it is. Either way, you pour a ton of emotion into this piece and it's easy to see that you've put yourself into it. I love and hate it. Love for quality, but hate, because you must feel terribly defeated. :(

I really enjoy the first stanza though. You're such a good writer. I can't wait to buy your book. :D
