Family

Family

A Poem by Neal S

I was born in Mississippi
This very small place
Mud on those jeans
Dirt covered my face

My father was a farmer
With a philosophy degree
I remember at the time
That didn't mean much to me

Mother was a strong woman
But still gentle and kind
She held us all together
Toe the line

I think about it now
It just seems back so far
Dancing with mom by candlelight
As dad played guitar

Now the son has a son
Mother and father are gone
Dreaming about that old farm
The family continues on

My first read of your works....
A sweet simple one that immediately takes one to one' own family..
The family continues on... and ,
The more we grow the more we miss our parents and their love..
The world seems to have changed a lot in terms of giving and taking but what remains with us is the family.
Thanks for sharing this ......

Thanks for taking the time to read it.
This reminds me of one of my families growing up (I've had several) and I miss those days. Everyone has moved on to new lives now, but I remember... good stuff

Thank you :)
Respect, Neal S

Flow is hypnotizing like starring at the river; it just flows without any doubt that its streaming might break.

Rhyming is skillful, it`s all wrapped up masterfully.

The feeling has a slight melancholy in it, but the pride, joy and honor dominate your poem.

Thank you Santoshi.
So glad you mentioned Dad playing guitar, as by about the second line I had it in my head that I wasn't so much reading this, but singing it in my head, to the tune of a country ballad. These lines and phrases you keep coming up with are the difference between good and great. "My father was a farmer with a philosophy degree", is a case in point, it is so simply stated, yet until you said it I wouldn't have put those two career paths together, yet it's obvious that not all farmers are farmers from the get go, just as in any other walk of life.
This really does have a beautiful, warm and comforting reminiscence to it, giving me the impression I would have smiled if I had seen them pass my way. Sadly, they are now gone, but the memories of their lives live on in you and yours. I'll have to stop saying this, but each new read of your work seems to get better and better.Enjoyed this one immensely Neal.

Happy I could bring up some memories.
Wow. I love this! Sooo powerful. I love the flow and structure, but it's more than that. Despite having a totally different upbringing, very atypical and dysfunctional, there was still so much foundation cemented into me from family influences...even down to singing in the evenings around a guitar. And yes, now we have our own families...and our grandparents and parents have passed...but the family goes on. This really resonated for me...so beautifully written.

Thanks :) And for the great review!
I love the inside story of this. I moved back to the farm my mom was born on 3 years ago. Funny how one remembers so many youthful times. Valentine

Yes ma'am it is..Thank you so much for the review.
Man if I played the harmonica.... Again Neal, great job. It is clear that you have soul and harnessed skill. A writer, as well as a musician, if you will.

You got heart.
Heart goes a long way with me.
Thank you for sharing this heavy piece. It is sad, as it is beautiful, but it is true. Legacy.

Very deep theme, very deep piece. I can talk about works of this degree all night, so I shall digress. Excellent execution, poet.
