Never Lose

Never Lose

A Poem by Tyler Jackson

I grew up in the era of the Babies

If you get what I mean, I'm talking about the 80's

The era where Moses was Unstoppable

USA beat Russia was the meaning of ANYTHINGS POSSIBLE

No blood, No foul so you had to prove you were Unstoppable

Larry Bird was the Great White Hope

Then came Magic, Who showed he was Dope

A skinny kid from North Carolina, showed us that men could Fly

Olajuwon's hook shot made grown men Cry

Kareem Abdul-Jabbar was on everybody's Wall

They played for the love of the Game

I wanna go back, today's just not the Same

Nike came and said JUST DO IT, is Phil Knight the Blame

It was contagious, I mean all Sports

Dan Marino had a cannon while John McEnroe ruled the tennis Courts

Walter Payton was elusive, nobody could catch Him

Lawrence Taylor came and everyone knew he could grab Him

Bo Jackson knew Everything

Montana threw and Clark just caught the Ball

Mike Tyson would walk in the ring, opponents would just Fall

Don't forget Wayne Gretzky he out skated them All

Rickey Henderson was the reason I watched Baseball

Waking up each day, start it off with Wheaties

Mom saying if you work hard you will be on that box Sweetie

Doing ten push-ups a day, feeling I accomplished a Feat

Eating all my vegetables and getting my eight hours of Sleep

Then it all changed, they stopped playing for the love of the Game

They played for shoe deals, trying to promote their Name

The fan had no real idea of the Change

Because they too were consumed in the consumption of brand Names

No longer were they excited about going to Disney World

They just wanted more money to change their World

Now what’s left, our sons are left with Mess

Buying two-hundred dollar sneakers to show kids they’re the Best

Talent is a gift that has been left on the Steps

Because without the right clothes, your talents look Undressed

No more Jordan on their Walls

But the shoe closet he fills them All

Our generation is lost, like a father and son playing catch with the Ball

How can we get it back, or is it just another lost Cause

But I found something new, that's been there all Along

I laughed at first but their love is just as Strong

It brings a smile on my face, because I see me in Them

The love for sports just as I have for Them

I can spend all day writing about this to you All

But I have to go play a sport with my DAUGHTER

This one is great. You are definitely talented! And I'm glad to hear there is a father out there somewhere playing with their children! That is what makes you a MAN! Anyways, I read all your work, I hope you post more soon!

Thank you so much, I felt that some people could remember the time when boys only played sports but now everything has changed even the athletes playing the sport

Absolutely love this piece! There is so much of sports/general trivia here and it is wonderful that you have meshed them up into a great poem....When I was reading it, it felt like I was rapping:)

And yes...I agree to what you have mentioned here....it is more about branding than the actual sport. Great thoughts here and good flow.

Excellent read!
