The Journey Is the Jewel

A poem about a man's most valuable treasure.

The blazing light commenced her climb from below,
Illuminating Mother Earth with her radiant glow.
Then the pines and the maples fluttered their green,
Sending their children adrift in the dawn of the scene.

My satchel was packed and I went on my way;
Beginning a journey, beneath the warmth of her ray.
I took the first step, and eyed the road ahead,
It twisted and turned; I had no clue where it led.

But I refused to turn back, for that wasn’t like me,
There was so much to discover, and so much to see.
I traveled the road by day and by night,
Boy, the world was so big; it was a wonderful sight!

I hiked the great Alps and took a ship out to sea;
I swung on a jungle’s vines, then mounted a great tree.
Next, I ventured off to the pyramids, researching the past,
I had so much fun; it was truly a blast!

Then I took a break to settle on down,
Marrying my bride in her sumptuous gown.
We raised three chicks, the joys of my life,
The days were euphoric, there was hardly a strife.

The seconds slipped away and the years drifted by,
I’d slowly grown old in the blink of an eye.
I reminisced of the days that went by too fast,
Thinking of my adventures, of the world that was vast.

I never really thought of what my life gained,
But then I remembered the truth I obtained.
It was none other than life’s precious jewel,
The journey from beginning to end, like thread on a spool.
