I missed the opening single quote and thought the closing single quote was an apostrophe. Sorry. The note should have been: If you use the comma, it has to be inside the quotes.

Aha, now I get you.. I was confused reading the previous comment! In case it was 'Striving to be,' as you say, would it still indicate a pause after the phrase while reading? I needed to emphasise the pause

Yes, the pause is indicated. The rule is that the punctuation must always be inside the quotations marks.
