A Catholic girl in Ireland

A Catholic girl in Ireland

A Story by Onlyme

She was sixteen

unmarried and pregnant.

and all alone.

A young Catholic girl in Ireland.

That does bring shame

dishonour to her family.

She's sent

to a religious order

funded but the government.

A mother-and-baby home.

Operated as a quasi-public

institutions for decades

stared in the 1920s.

Their function

was to hide the prohibited-out-of-wedlock pregnancy

from public viewing and knowledge.

To have birth, in seclusion

while waiting for their

newborn to appear.

They're worked

for their keep

with heavy laundry tasks.

When a baby is born.

It is then take off them.

Adopted into a good Catholic family

abroad in some far of the land.

The said mother would never know

or find out.

Who adopted their child.

If a baby was stillborn or complication

causing death.

They would bury the baby

with a wooden cross marking

their graves.

The unforgotten lost souls

of Ireland.

" One's tragedy is someone else's excitement " . Good writing skills and ideas , but you need to make them a bit longer to make the reader more excited and looking for answers . Good job , try to write more short stories .

Now I'm angry. This brings out such irritation at the injustice of women back then. Guess that's my inside feminist getting feisty. It's all about appearances. ARGH. Nice write though. :)

There were and ARE STILL a number of those types of "places" throughout the world. Societies are "powered" by 'uncommon' opinion and religious-led drama...
