When television sets ruled the world. LOL

When television sets ruled the world. LOL

A Story by Onlyme

Do you remember as a kid
growing up?
The only entertainment
was the "goggle box"  meaning
the television box.
After dinner and everything
was all done and dusted
the dishes, plates, washed and
dried by hand.
Everyone would sit
around the TV box
and watch all the soaps
and dramas. Let alone
documentaries that where
on the box.
As mum and dad
loved to watch them.
Stop for the occasional
cups of tea or coffee
during the advert breaks
and of course,
go to the loo
if needed.
So you never
missed any of the shows
you were watching.
Come dead at 9 pm
it was the National News
and obligatory
you watch it
at our house.
Then 25 minutes past
the hour.
Your local area news
network.
Took over for 10 minutes.
Then back to your following shows
for 9.35pm onwards.
To which was normally
a good film.
That lasted a few hours.
Then time for bed
not long after that ended.
So you could get up for
school in the morning. Laughing.
Our lives were revolved
around that box
in the corner.
If you let it control you.
Thinking back.
That was quality time
spent with the family
around this dam box.
Bar the occasional outings
in the car to the
seaside and towns
and villages that were
not local for a drive
and day out.
Or the odd visit to the movies
or bowling alley, and maybe
skating ring.
How do things change?

Most folk travel abroad
to sunny climates.
Or away skiing in France
or somewhere different.
Or driving across Europe i
n general with the family
in tow with the car
and caravan attached
to the back of the vehicle.
I like I can't imagine many
families now. Actually sitting
around the plasma flat screen
tv. All watching a programme.
I imagine most playing on their
i pads, and some on a computer
in another room. And maybe
some in living room watching
a movie on Netflicks.
Just my opinion of course.

i guess i grew up a bit differently in the old days...couldn't wait to get back outside and spend as much time as possible riding bikes and just being outdoors...but....Sunday was our family day to watch our shows together.
Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea was one of them....and then Bonanza, i believe.
interesting how we will spend family time together watching...but not talking...

I remember old TV without a cable box, just rabbit ears and no remote. There were many shows I watched including the late late show. Movies were good too. Everything was family oriented with no embarrassing sex jokes. It was a great (and better) time.

The old TV shows were a real family affair
Life of Reilly
I Love Lucy
Bonanza
Father knows best
Etc.
Etc.
Everybody else left but I am still sitting and watching

Yeah, grew up with the box . . . just past the age of radio shows. Only had one station to watch for a long time . . . then the miracle of cable . . . wow 6 whole channels! Yes, in the summer us kids spent our evenings outdoors. Besides there was nothing but reruns! Looking back it sure seems a simpler time.

Well . . . do families still enjoy such things together now!?
