Value Our Elders

Value Our Elders

A Poem by Onlyme

An older person is full of wisdom,
teachings and experiences
of living life.

I used to enjoy as a child
and growing up
Spending
quality time with my elders.

Like my grandmother.
But sadly couldn't do so
with my grandfather
as he passed before
I was born.
And my other grandparents
didn't live close.So rarely
saw them.

But I learnt a lot from
my grandmother
from baking cakes. Knitting
and crotching.

And learnt what life was
really like when she
was a young girl growing
up.

It was like a real life history lesson.

Our elders, do not get treated with
respect and admiration like they used to
when I was a child growing up.

How sad and tragic is that?
They are more likely to get
mocked and picked on by young now.

It is a shame. I weekly visit with several elderly people at a long term facility for the aged. These are such interesting people! I am saddened in knowing that they seldom have any family that comes and sees them. I know these old folks would be very appreciative.

Take care - Dave

I was fortunate and had close relationships with all four grandparents. Each one of them enriched my life and I feel truly blessed that they were part of it. It is a sad reflection on society when older people are cast aside like discarded rubbish. That has not happened in my family. We recognise that wisdom comes with age. An interesting and topical write Dawn

yes, it is very sad how the elderly are shoved aside these days...
they still have so much to give...and don't get the chance to do it...
