The Innocence of a child

The Innocence of a child

A Poem by Onlyme

I saw this happen
the other day
in a supermarket.

A sweet child
barely say
5 yrs of age,
in the store.

Shouting to her mother
she was going to get her
a carton of milk.
She needs her shopping.

Off she trots to get it.
Full of happiness and joy.
Bringing it back with
such glee and eagerness.

And saying to her mother
here is your milk?
As the mother says Thankyou.
And the little girl shouting out loud.
your very welcome mummy.

And then off,
she runs to get some
bread from a shelve
close by
shouting again.

I am away to get some bread for
your mum.
Thank you, sweetheart.
Says Mum again.

I thought may so adorably sweet
and wholesome.
So eager to please,
innocence and such
charmingly pure kindness
and helpfulness.

Then we grow up
into adults and
lose that innocence
and sweetness
of the world
in general
and that is
so sad to me.

As we should all
have that innocence
and sweetness,
about us all.

Through our life.
Soppy but true.
In my perspective of life.

As when you grow up
reality and life is far
from both sweet or
innocent.

Long may it last for
children to grow up with
both Innocence and sweetness.

When I was a kid, I always felt too precocious for my age, and wanted to grow up as soon as possible. I thought Peter Pan was a stupid character, but now that I'm a grown up, I understand its appeal. Good observational skills, Dawn...made me picture the innocent child quite vividly.

Amazing piece, Dawn. The time when a child grows up and loses their innocence is one of the great tragedies in life - if only everyone could see the world as a child does. Keep up the great work!

I often wonder this too Dawn - if we all could hold onto that pure innocence and eagerness to please others oh what a wonderful world it would be indeed! Keep writing - you have fabulous thoughts to share :)

Innocence for a short time and then kicked into adulthood.
I think there still is a lot of good in the world, unfortunately the bad gets more press.
Still love the joy kids give you, gives me an excuse to play on the trampoline.

What a wonderful wish for us all. I have a newly-minted 10 year old. His birthday was very recent. I do endeavor to keep him enthusiastic about the world but truth, I don't think he needs my help:)

Observational poems are some of my faves, and this one is speaks loud and clear as to your skill at this type of poetry. The hurry to grow up, only to dream of being young, again.
Such a dilemma, a serious dilemma. Thank you for taking me on this walk with you through this supermarket.

Cheers,
DAH

This is so true, Dawn.
Children are wonderfully innocent their feelings, their desire and their action.
They never know what reality is, so they flow with what their mind dictate to them.
Stupid or not stupid, they just flow freely.

Things are very different as a child, no worries, no stress, you're mind isn't tainted yet of all the badness of this world. Very well written. Well Done.

The sweetness of childhood never lasts as long as it should. It is a joy to watch little children in their innocense. You capture the child beautifully.
