The First Dance

The First Dance

A Poem by David Cannon
"

A poem written about a documentry of an elderly couple and the wife suffered from Alzheimer''s it was an extremely moving insight into the disease and the effects it had on their relationship

"

The First Dance

Fifty years of marriage,
He gazes long into her eyes,
Alzheimer's holds her captive,
stealing pages of her time,

Although her mind cruelly fades,
as the disease takes its hold,
all of her memories live in pictures,
Fading echoes through her soul,

Photographs upon the mantle,
Remind her how things used to be,
Black and white wedding pictures,
summer days spent by the sea,

He runs a brush through her hair,
Reliving memories in words,
a wondering smile upon her face,
then he knows that he is heard,

A gentle kiss upon her cheek
He embraces her quivering hand.
Lifts her from the armchair,
Then face to face they stand,

On the grammar phone play the old songs,
every day they do the same,
to that song they fell in love to,
the first dance they dance again.
