The Black Death

The Black Death

A Poem by Emily Dickinson Jr.
"

It's a poem about the black death/ bubonic plague

"

Thump, bang, crash
The bodies fall

The sin has come
And consumed all

The black carriers scurry
Through the night
Like a Grim's pet
They snicker in delight

"Sinners will fall"
Is the message sent

That is

Until each pope falls

"This can't be what god has meant."

They know our bodies
Leave us holy
Yet wrought
Tis ailed, diseased

Numbers rise and never drop
Not a soul left behind
Only bodies left behind

The death bell tolls

They rot like a ruin
And the boils boil over
And they decay as they lay

Not a soul left to feel the sorrow
No one to feel an ounce

Of dreadful dismay

I'm a history nerd, so seeing the words "Black Death" drew me right in. I liked this one quite a bit, my favorite piece of yours that I've read so far. I absolutely love this line:
""Sinners will fall'
Is the message sent
That is
Until each pope falls"

Keep up the good work :)

lol I know right but you know they say bi things come in small packages
Powerful!
The Popes, indeed, I was pleased to see that imagery within this poem, those who preach, often fall themselves but oh do they make out the "sinner" part first...in the end, what matters is that we understand connection before our fall...
Imagery here is wonderfully presented!

The world had bad days. Sickness once controlled our world. Half the population was lost. This new world had sickness that killed millions monthly and few give a nickel. Hunger and HIV is alive and strong. A powerful poem. Based on history make poetry scary and real. Thank you for the excellent poem.

I am currently writing a paper on the Black Death and I was thrilled to run across this piece. I really like the premise of this poem. You manage to capture the rapidity and ruthlessness with which the Plague took victims. I feel the poem may be supplemented by adding some more onomatopoeia like that which you started with. This could help heighten the rapidity and darkness that is established at the beginning. Also, the sudden leaving off of rhyming disrupted the flow of it for me. If you are going to have a rhyming pattern, it should carry through or not be there at all.

I love how you've drawn a perfect line between body and soul as it relates to harbingers of mass deaths, like plagues or wars (those two phenomena have always been married in my mind)...great :)

You're very welcome :)
Oh, such amazement, love all things related to the bubonic plague, but this took the cake with a tad alliteration, some rythme, a bit of plight from a dreadful blight... Dank and so very horrifying. Well penned piece indeed, especially the pope part ;)
