Sixteen

This is a song I wrote the night that I found out my cousin was pregnant.

I’m only sixteen

But my mistakes outrank my years

I’m only sixteen

But I’ve cried so many tears

I’m lost and alone

In this world on my own

My baby cries

And tears flood my eyes

 

A child am I

Yet a mother the same

Too old for the playground

Yet too young for that name

I know I’ve made mistakes

I know I’ve made you cry

But please, God, don’t let her die

God, I know now

It’s not up to me

You love me the same

Even how I used to be

But, God, my must she suffer?

She’s only a girl

It’s not her fault

I brought her into this world

 

Please, God above

Don’t take away my love

She’s trying so hard

To live another day

She’s just a little girl
A year old today

They say my baby

Won’t come home tonight

That is fabulous writing: its so true. Alot of my friends had babies young, sometimes you'd see them struggle a little but the youth of young mothers and their determination to take care of their babies regardless of peoples reactions is an everyday occurence. I hope your cousin's sense of despair is over...this is great writing!!!
