Day After Day

Day After Day

A Poem by Victoria Descartes
"

I never said hello.

"

Sitting across from you day after day

At my favorite little coffee shop

I wonder how your day is going and what you’re up to

I contemplate ways to start a conversation

I wonder what you’re thinking and what kind of drink you ordered

Sitting across from you day after day

At my favorite little coffee shop

I watch your serious face and your lingering glance on mine

As you draw mindlessly on your paper

Sitting across from you day after day

At my favorite little coffee shop

I study your features

And notice how you part your hair a little to the side

I see how the lights reflect in your eyes

And I try to inconspicuously look at the tattoos on your arms

I like them

Sitting across from you day after day

At my favorite little coffee shop

I wonder why I can’t come up with the words to say hello

How could it be so hard to greet and smile at a stranger?

But you do this to me and I can’t figure out why or how

I don’t even know your name

Sitting across from you day after day

At my favorite little coffee shop

I wonder what your life has been like

And whether its been fulfilling or difficult

What are your hopes and dreams?

Sitting across from you day after day

At my favorite little coffee shop

I can’t help but wonder if you have ever noticed me

Or wondered what I’m up to

Or what I’m thinking or what my favorite drink is

Sitting across from you day after day

At my favorite little coffee shop

I know that my time is running short

Because maybe you will stop coming here

Or you will bring a girl

And buy her coffee

Sitting across from you day after day

At my favorite little coffee shop

I wonder if today will be the day where we will no longer be strangers

And I will know your name and my name will linger on your lips

I can’t help but imagine myself sitting at your table

Drinking coffee and talking about life

Sitting across from you day after day

At my favorite little coffee shop

I watch you get up to leave

And immediately I can’t wait for the next time

That we are both here

In our favorite little coffee shop

The repetition of the lines allow the reader to feel the frustration of not being able to introduce yourself, yet...the enjoyment you get from seeing this person day after day, a routine that you have come to look forward to. Nicely done!

Thank you steppenwolf! I appreciate your kind words.
so often we are afraid to speak to someone we see every day and are interested in. It is a shame. Well done Victoria.

This was so lovely to read. I like the repetition you used and the story the poem told.
