Ignorance is Bliss

Ignorance is Bliss

A Poem by rachielle

Walk into a mall
And what do you see?
All these things related to beauty;
People, temporarily carefree-
All these, vanity.

Walk into a shop, oh boy
Such consumer's joy-
A discounted imported toy.

For a few hours on Sunday,
In shopping heaven we stay,
And nothing can go wrong.
The worst of days are forgotten;
The world outside, hidden
Once we step into that tiled building.

While we divulge into what we want,
We forget about those who can't-
Those children sleeping on the streets
With nothing but death to beat.

Such selfishness is a shame, don't you think?
As we drown ourselves in our favorite things,
Another hungry child, born to die,
On the freezing pavements lie.

The message is there, and so is the passion! As a work, you might want to read the poem aloud; there are places where the lines are a little bumpy and don't flow as well as they could. The first stanza kinda sounded sing-songy to me, but the second stanza really nailed the rhythm. Just my humble opinion. Please keep posting your talent!!

Nicely written with a very powerful message behind it. This is one of those pieces I think more people should hear. Its greatly crafted as far as structure and it is also thought provoking.

Wow, this was a really hard-hitting piece. Though executed in the simplest way possible, your poem carried such a real, relevant, and complex message, and reading this poem definitely made me stop, think, and question. This poem was full of truth and wisdom. Great write,

Just think that with this little poem you may have even helped a few of those poor children. Many people just don't know the intensity of things until someone points them out. This poem, I am sure, will inspire someone to help another person in some way. It's sad how people can lose track of the important things and instead follow their greed and selfishness. And according to this poem I'm not the only person who understands this. Very nicely put.

Yep, that hit the spot! lol
Like I have said in a poem before, our commercial greed is the death of another! The world has got is so wrong, its not there isn't enough money and food for everyone!
Heartbreaking!
Awesome poem

So truthful here,
This is simply powerful and wonderful.

Your words are strong on the poem. But we live in a country(USA) that will spend 1.5 trillion on war. 60 billion on hunger. World is confused. Sickness, homeless and hungry roam this earth and all we do is spend money on war. This is a fact. 1 million a month will die of hunger in Africa. I million a month will die of HIV in Africa. I don't know. We need a miracle. Many men and woman of peace to appear before it is too late for all of us. Your poem was outstanding. You did your goal of a good writer. You made me think.
