O Captain, my Captain

O Captain, my Captain

A Poem by Dirge Graves

“O Captain, my Captain”

And a set of heels hit the desk.

Only the teacher’s voice breaks the silence

And another smashes his desk,

And again says,

“O Captain, my Captain.”

“O Captain, my Captain”

Standing in the open doorway,

Looking so small, yet standing so proud and tall,

Even though you’ve been pushed away.

They hail to you!

“O Captain, my Captain.”

“O Captain, my Captain”

Gasps the pale boy with the tissue,

And he looked back from the odious door.

He uttered what he felt was due.

He whispered back,

“Thank you”

‘O Captain, my Captain’

In reverence here I exhale,

Pondering who my Mr. Keating is.

Who I should so fervidly hail,

Then to my feet,

“O Captain, my Captain!”

“O Captain, my Captain”

Who put so much wisdom in me,

Who taught me how to truly see the world,

And does not tell me who to be.

Letting out a,

“Thank you.”
