POEM #1- Poetry Month

As I step off the back porch,

into the freshly fallen snow,

I look in all four directions

seeking balance in a new day.

As I walk through the snow,

Grandmother speaks to me:

     “Aztec, see how the snow

     covers and quenches the Crocuses thirst;

how their purple or yellow petals

     reach for the sun’s warmth.

     Even as the whiteness

     and cold surrounds them,

     they survive and grow strong.

     You, like them,

     are the creatures of Nature.

     Never forget who you are,

     or where you are going.

My grandson, be alive in the beauty

     above and below.

As I think on these words,

I smile

and renew my life’s journey

that will lead me to you.

Red,
Grandmother was a wise woman. A truly heartfelt poem. Thanks.

This is one of your best . . . seems more personal, as if you're telling of a precious true snippet from your youth. May we all have a grandparent's wisdom such as this (love your grandma quote). I find that being outdoors, feeling the lessons of the ancients all around me, even tho I didn't know my grandparents, it's as if the whole wilderness wants to grandmother me! That's what your poem brings to mind (((HUGS))) Fondly, Margie

We can gain wisdom and guidance from our elders not just for now, but for years to come. Suddenly, their words will pop into our head. Perhaps they're talking to us and reminding us.

Nicely said poem, redzone.

Aloha Redzone, this is lovely. The ever present connectivity of our ancestors keeps us strong and grounded, they remind us of our responsibility to the natural world. Words to fill us again and again. I love this type of aina and ohana poetry, beautiful!

My grandmother had a garden that wrapped around the front porch. She took vigilant care of the azaleas, roses, and crocuses, just as much as she did me. I love how you implanted the voice of your grandmother coming back to you - as a grandmother's voice has a habit of doing from time to time, no matter the years. It gave such a palpable touch to this extraordinary piece.

I am thrilled you are back, and hope you are able to stay!

ne worries, me neither... always nice to see you here... so here is a big wave from me to you....
Nice conversational tone. It has an ease about it that some of your work does not, as if there's a settling in, a realization ...
One minor suggestion - your only dip into the past tense is the "stepped" which could be easily switched to "step" to match the rest of the piece
