Ive not been to Rome, or Vatican city, I was raised Catholic but was never an alter boy. Never experienced any abuse but my sisters who attended parochial school told of nun abuse. What I do know is the Catholic church invented warfare. They have the largest hoard of gold and other treasures know to mankind. People always have an opinion about Catholics and they are usually wrong, but in modern times the church has failed over and over. I still believe in one God, creator of heaven and earth, who gave his only son , so that our sins may be forgiven, I just believe that he goes by many names. I will get on my knees and pray to your ALLAH, Buddah, Mohammed, or any other name you chose to use. We all believe in a higher being. Its Faith. Very thought provoking, poem written with style and eloquence. and defended with the same

Having been raised by a Catholic/Protestant union, and having watched how the Church and the Papacy has failed to seriously address the systemic levels of abuse that have occurred within their institutions, I have to agree with you that they have failed in their duty to protect and nurture those who placed faith in their leadership. Perhaps, as you said, Faith should remain solely between the individual and the higher being they believe in, free of institutional interference. I appreciate you taking the time to leave me with a snippet of your own opinion.

As one who attended a catholic school, I can attest to both physical and coercive abuse. Thankfully for me, there was no sexual misconduct as is known to occur among rogue priests.
If one looks at the history of the church and its powerful leaders, one has to admit there are certainly examples of cover-ups and abuse of power.
As we know, religious unrest can be seen throughout history. It's all about belief and how radical or resolute one can be about that which they believe in. Some believe If a person is taught to show deference to their religious leaders without showing concerns about issues or historical events, this could be seen as unfair and there's a good chance the leaders will remain in authority, unchallenged and of higher ranking order. Others don't believe in an organized religion and have unshakable faith.
I don't know enough about the crusades and various wars that took place so I'll not go there.
Everyone has a right to their beliefs, whether for or against. But one thing I know....When I die, I don't want to go have to go through a life review.

You seemed to have really grasped the intention of the poem. I agree that everyone has a right to their beliefs and the freedom to express their own viewpoints on what is written. With the passing of the Pope, the focus here was mostly on the legacy his papacy shall leave behind. It’s that swept under the carpet, turn a blind eye with very minimal vision and action in response to the staggering levels of abuse of all kinds that have occurred that leave a stain on his papacy, if not the man himself personally.
Thank you so much for sharing your informed views on this poem. Much appreciated.
Each of Mankind wears his or her own crown. Judge not less thee be judged. Fallacy is assumption.

And the fallacy of a papacy is not an assumption in light of an abundance of evidence in their response to systemic institutional abuse afflicted upon innocents at the hands of its members. The poem is not playing the man. It is playing the position, the institution and all it claims to represent. Thank you for sharing your thoughts. I appreciate it.

It was the Pope at the time who issued the need for a Crusade. War, death and destruction as pledged as a need by proclaimed servants of God.
