A Poem by Seal
"

This is just a quick poem I came up with. I'm trying to improve my writing so feedback is appreciated!

"
When you look in the mirror what do you see?
I see a girl smiling at me.
Her face starts to crack and I feel it too,
I let myself crumble,
For why does it matter,
When I want to shatter?
Why am I her?
She is not me,
She is the devil taunting me.
I pray at the altar,
But god starts to falter,
His followers won't let me be saved.
Wash away all the guilt,
Just let me wilt,
But why do I have to be ashamed?
I want to be me,
Not playing another role,
I will set my soul free.

Were you smiling for yourself, or for the mirror. If you are smiling for yourself, then you would not crack because only a shell can crack. So you must have been smiling for the mirror. And since the mirror is not you, you were smiling for others. Smiling for their expectations you have assumed were your own. It's good to be really sad rather than falsely smiling. At least the sadness is real. Then you can start from there. Maybe the sadness came from valuing others more than yourself.
