Living in a Day

Living in a Day

A Poem by R.E. Ray

Living in a Day

I am a man of fifty-two,

living in a day;

it’s nearly four-thirty p.m.

Why do I kill time

waiting for five o’clock whiskey,

a steak dinner at six,

your spontaneous call at seven,

a pink sunset at eight,

the waterfall of a waning crescent

on Egyptian cotton,

the shine of your face

on another continent?

I knew an average man of seventy-six

 ~ dead at midnight.

His lady was like you ~ a heart who beat

until the summer sunrise,

who never spoiled a second frowning

~ or dying.

I am a man of near-nightfall

blowing time looking at the clock

~ for you behind the candle,

myself in the dark.

So well written.
Haunting, in fact.
Not sure if it's your schedule you're dissatisfied with, or how you "check it off" as if
on a list. Are you continually looking forward to these events and not actually "living"
the time in between?
Whatever the case, very nicely done, good poet!

I usually have a deep response to a profound but simple piece like this...but today I'm gonna quit killing time and go live my day...ty ~ until another excellent read...
