Sanctuary

Sanctuary

A Poem by R.E. Ray

Sanctuary

Perched, the vultures occupy the cypress posts

surrounding the square acre,

a battalion of paper pines in perfect formation.

They can’t finish me off, pick my limbs clean

or penetrate the six-foot shadowed shoots,

the needled alleys where diamondbacks lay,

where I am coiled ~ an embryo of five decades,

waiting for sundown and its black hounds

who come one by one, hunting again,

a goddamned death squad,

the turtleneck birds roosting on the fringes,

a hundred guts full of rats and small things,

the old poet staining last year’s pulpwood

as we both caw and bleed out,

pining for Teflon feathers, raven wings,

the spine to fly.

"...the spine to fly" may well have been meant to be taken literally. Still, it has an irresistible
metaphorical ring.
You are a seasoned outdoorsman, of that, I have no doubt.
Your bitter feelings toward the raw, Darwinian scenes starkly described
cannot be fabricated.
Powerful, Mr. Ray!

this is a fine example of a poem that demands to be visited time and time again... and for no other reason than it is deserves to be thoroughly considered and enjoyed.. I shall not attempt to analyse it here but am more than happy to recommend it and let's just say it is write up my street..
