Free Verse     …

I sketch the far side of things; the span of bridges barely out of sight.

Too often, I chance to see around the leafy bends; the rumble of trains buzzing toward crossroad towns.

With earned glory, my memory assails the rattle of hearses, deemed obsolete of merciless echoes.

My first foe yields to sheltered valleys, tucked in between sylvan mountain ridges.

Way up in the night sky, as it welcomes its unbidden guests, our waking world, lacking rooms for some dreams, hinges its desires on engines turning.

My mind goes blank sometimes, silencing clocks hung on darkened walls.

First of dates tug at the heartstrings, never devoid of sharp blades.

Perhaps I’m tired of resting places, heart pounds, winter calls, own council and sudden oops.

Maybe the symbols are vanishing as bums, panhandling for hexed meanings, wriggling out of muses’ spheres and creative shores.

But, being sought by grownups, its voice can not be hushed.

I must sketch now…the free verse.

To me, this doesn't stand out for being "free verse" . . . it seems out of the ordinary for you becuz it's so highly nuanced. Your writing seems more straightforward to me, most of the time, but this one is more "out there" just bouncing around the image-filled observations on the edges of your attention. Sometimes highly nuanced writing seems a little rambling to me, but with you, the writing is floating on whimsy, but there's still a good solid flow to your idea stream, so it's more satisfying to me (a straightforward person) than purely nuanced writing can sometimes be! Whoa! I know it seems that at first glance but if my reader puts a little thought in it and the image, it will make a lot of sense. I will tempt to simplify it and hopefully you will grasp some of its multi-layered meanings. I free verse writings, I or we tend to sketch things in our depth and then project it from experiences that are far out of sight of ordinary people. It is like bridges that connect point A to point B in our lives but most don't see that connection from ordinary people. We are constantly connecting time, places and people with or without relization. To the second point, we take chances of rejection or acceptance, looking around curves and corners trying to reach our destination through the trains of thought. Thirdly, we dig out of the well of memory, some living and some dead(hence the image of hearses) and so forth. We hear those echoes over and over in our heads. Then as poets, we embrace nature with its majestic valleys(low points), mountains(high points) and so forth. We try to live in harmony with all of it. We also embrace the beauty of the night with its glorious stars and leave the mundane world to worry about making engines of money and trade...In other instances, we get mind blocks(our mind goes blank) lacking any inspiration. Other instances, we are affected by love and its multi-faceted joys and pains(blades is a symbol of pain)...First of loves, first of dates and first of breakups will have everlasting effect on us and psyche. It defines some and not others. So the conclusion of it all, the author is questioning all these things and how tired he, she are from all of it, how inspired or not from all of it and then they proceed to pen it on papar to share and get it out of the system so to speak. Only the grownups in emotions will understand the poet, poetess and what they went through. Grownups in understanding ofcourse... I hope that explained my weird mind and how I don't write straightforward sometimes but delve in strange things. God bless and thank you for all dear poet.

I am honored that you took so much time to explain this. I find this to be a very valuable explanation. Normally, I feel it's good for each reader to take from each poem that which resonates, if not at all close to the poet's intention for the poem. But where I am totally unfamiliar with the way a "free verse" poet works, I needed to be gifted with this long explanation, becuz I never would've gotten there on my own. I will never be as nuanced as how you've explained your poem, but at least now I can see how far from that possibility I still am! *wink! wink!*

of course when I saw the title I had to open and read it! this is amazing dear Sami, truly amazing, for me Your opening lines struck me deep,

here we read, we see, we feel, we have the empathy and yearn with the Writer, the writer who strives for more, always look for more, try to paint that more, anytime he gets a glimpse, the Writer who will always have his freedom to paint with words, I feel magic and the private world of this Writer "You", sincere, affectionate full with emotions piece.
