Sound Inventions     By Sami Khalil

A scientific possibility based on fiction…

Images of his dad were of a nebulous nature. He knew how a great inventor he was, but with dubious assumptions. He always dreamed of following in his footsteps, not breaking the mold or having a hasty retreat.

From examining pictures, patents and writings of his dad, who worked with a team of inventors at Lawrence Berkeley labs in California, he surmised about the precocious talents he once held before departing the world from a car accident.

One deservedly mentioned of his dad’s was the highlighted achievement of a technique(software) utilizing high-resolution maps of old discs and cylinders and, with further processing, eliminating undesired noises, resulting in reproducing all the vague audios by calculating the stylus motions across the grooves, making digital sound files that were very clear. It was a sound recovery software.

It was so amazing that the Smithsonian Institute in Washington, D.C. tasked him and the group to restore the 200 or so old recordings of the great inventor Alexander Graham Bell. No one ever knew till now how Mr. Bell sounded like. By using a (non-invasive optical sound recovery process), he did match the recordings of the 200 old discs, preserved at the Volta Labs, to the manuscripts written by Mr. Bell himself.

It caused a sensation among scientists for it was a great effort and collaboration. Other than that, the maxim hung on the wall, belonging to his dad, inspired him to be an overachiever. It stated: “Inventions define our history, transform our world. Ideas instill curiosity, solutions instill luminosity.” He kept that in the back of his mind as he finished his sound engineering degree from Berkeley. His mom always spurred him on for she had a great passion for technology.

After graduation, he indulged himself in building software based somehow on his father’s designs. He worked day and night scarcely knowing sleep. He was able to make a software that could capture on a computer screen, utilizing a special receiver microphone, sound waves, spoken and scattered words, glimpses of the past inhabitants’ speeches, due to the fact that we all have our unique and special signature wavelengths of sound, preserved somewhere in the ether. He pried it apart, then put it all back together to produce a cohesive text on the screen.

But he had a conundrum at hand now. The more his work became famous, his recordings of ancient prophets and holy men showed stark variations of the texts at hand. He proved beyond the shadow of doubt that religious texts were tampered with by man.

Religious leaders tried with futility to discredit him to no avail. They even claimed his discoveries were full of puns and jokes, that he cleverly injected sabotaged words. Some vied to kill him if he stopped not. Trouble was brewing. It boiled over to the governments of the world. He remembered his dad’s maxims. He saw it proper to believe that many who seek curiosity desire not luminosity!

Great imagination Sami. I'll pass on having my thoughts plucked out of the ether. Nowadays it's digital indiscretion s that catch us out. A timely warning!
Well told too.
All the best.

Yes, some things are best left to lie asleep in the promise of being. There is much we are not ready for.

A really well told tale Sami; the last sentence being so very true.

Beccy.

Your well-told story lays out the intricacies of this technology in a way that does not interrupt the storyline with unnecessary detail. You put in just enuf detail to make this story feel authentic, but not so much that it gets bogged down. I couldn't help but think about how sometimes politicians accuse scientists of having ulterior motives (such as regarding climate change issues) . . . but those who view everything according to political advantage cannot possibly imagine how a pure scientist only wants to seek truth. Those with tainted motives cannot perceive such purity of heart. Your story conveys a strong relatable maxim for how things are going these days! (((HUGS))) Fondly, Margie

Knowledge doesn't bring wisdom to many " Many who seek curiousity desire not luminosity " wonderfully profound observation! Your beautifully written sound inventions narration is absolutely captivating Sami, the information you provided to understand the processes of many techniques is wonderful. By any chance are you a software engineer?

That last line says it all, Sami. Many who are inquisitive really do not want to find the correct answer....only the answer they assume is the right one. Based on history....well written. I liked it. Lydi**

What a clever idea. Loved the delivery and the wrap was so very poignant. So true. For some curiosity is a desire to be proved right. I think maybe we all fall into that trap sometimes.
