Thoughts Arise        by Sami Khalil

A modern English sonnet…

I like rustic barns and rickety mills

Even the ones painted by some artists

By waves rolling shoreward, winds soughing hills

Down the sunlit skylines and fields’ harvests.

Should I say my answer is mere bonding

For I declare on gray days, I feel rapt

By swirling dreams and tangled wires hanging

Vying for the carnival senses, so apt.

Discern what you like and leisurely fits

Either asleep or until wakefulness

Celebrate the burning urges and wits

For in silent attentions hide greatness.

Now that my French horns are old and weary

Joy still erupts, thinking of my Dearie.

I enjoyed this. My favorite line was, "In silent attentions hide greatness." Perhaps we are all meant to be observers in this world but so many get caught up in schemes and plans that they just don't have time to pay attention to details. I enjoyed the read.

Sami, have read your poems on and off for years. but whilst not meaning to judge, I think your modern sonnet just might be your best ever of all! You're presented such a visual flow of sights and emotion around your words, then ended with such a delightful couplet

Great sonnet! Love the first part, which makes me think of paintings and colors and hues (wish I could paint them, mostly I paint figures!!!) your images are quite vivid and I love "on gray days I feel rapt by swirling dreams and tangled wires".... your word choice is dreamy.... and the whole sonnet is excellent....
Best, B

Your sonnets make the beginning of every day something to look forward to, Sami. Did you know why barns are red? Hundreds of years ago, farmers painted their barns with linseed oil to help seal the wood and keep it from rotting. Rust was mixed with the oil to keep fungi and moss from growing on the wood. This turned the oil red. Barns today are still painted red in honor of the tradition. Pretty cool, eh?

Love the ending.. Paintings of those kind let's us reminds us of what we used and still love. Now I'm reminded of my long time dream, having a farm, getting old there, doing what farmers do or just having greens trees sorrounds me, is enough to make me at peace... Like how your so I tune to barns, and beautiful structures, I'm more intune to nature... Wonderful work brother...
