One Human from Another       by Sami Khalil

A modern English sonnet

Left to wonder, of dearth this plunder

Losing track of piled things and active verbs

Heedful to pay notice, being sober

For meanings fade when oft kicked to the curbs.

There are indeed monkeys perched on our backs

Struggles of age, of love, of weight, money

Why let things falter or slip through the cracks

Doors can swing either way, life shows honey?

There are reasons to hold on living standards

Those who can not swim need surely life vests

Pray that you get back to dry shores, landwards

You owe a debt to endurances and quests.

Spur not the truth, abiding in self-lies

Those who quibble about costs, earn no prize.

Sami,

This is a most poignantly powerful and thought provoking philosophical piece of wonderful Poetry that does speak of the necessity of retaining the compassion of our Humanity ... Life is filled with adversity, but every adversity can be overcome, save that of losing, giving up, or sacrificing our own Humanity in choosing to forget that the word Human is derived from the word Humane, which means to possess and exhibit compassion for and towards other living creatures, not just dogs and cats and such but, other living, breathing, suffering Human Beings ... Well done, Sami ...

:::: ))))))))))))
I remember the saying , "The monkey just jumped on his back." It usually occurred during track season. If you ran the 440 (that's yards.) the monkey usually jumped on your back about the 300 yard mark. A runner had to struggle and fight back in order to make it to the finish line. Those who prepared well for this made it without too much agony. Those who didn't faltered and faded.
This poem caused me think about that. You don't get to the finish line by complaining. In track your life vest was your dedication to training. You either sank or swam. I saw a lot of sinking ships out there. I see them still, scooting along the aisle of Wal-Mart.

the picture is haunting along with the accompanying, well-crafted words. that which we don't own up to can become heavy. we all struggle with different things but must not let them become the focus. 'tis in overcoming where we must take pleasure. we all pay the piper but must not disparage over the cost but rather enjoy the dance whilst we can... :)

"piled things and active verbs" the English teacher in me loves that line.
I like how talk about cost in this poem, but not in a monetary way.
How much are you willing to pay back of life in order to have a comfortable existence, and be happy with yourself.
Ooo I like this one so much, Sami,
