In memory of Jay Gatsby

In memory of Jay Gatsby

A Poem by Scarlet M.

He chased her like drifting clouds,

A beauty behold, he longed for her,

Adorned her with jewels, sparkling, brilliant,

Like her eyes, reflected in the stars.

He filled her milieu with flowers,

and all fine things she could ever imagine.

He was entirely captivated, primed to run away,

To abandon his world of riches,

For her sake and his.

Blinded by a charm that is only visible in the eye;

Forgetting the heart in which fate truly lies.

He loved her genuinely,

Truly, she was his paragon of happiness;

His one and only goal.

Yet he got nothing in return.

Not love, not her heart, nor her soul.

Abandoned, despised, and forgotten,

Not a single stem was offered.

Now he wonders in his deep slumber,

Forever mourning, and reaching,

for that green light,

A love he knew that was never meant to be his.

I have yet to see the movie or read the book, but I enjoyed your poem.

Oh STP it, stop it! This is my favorite movie and you have strikingly preformed it in such short sentences. Yes the green light that lost its value was excellently partched in the poem. Its my favorite art of all

The story that inspired your poem is a good one & your poem has also done a good job of capturing the essence of the "Great Gatsby"! You include many well-described details to show us his love & adoration, this is what makes your poem palpable in the way he expressed his ill-fated love.

"A love he knew that was never meant to be his." That's what makes this such a great story.

Yep, this is beautiful. I never read the book but I've seen both movie versions and my heart broke each time Jay was screwed over by people he was completely loyal to, especially that b***h daisy.
heartbreak boulevard:
“So we beat on, boats against the current, borne back ceaselessly into the past.”

A sad poem, I do understand.
"Now he wonders in his deep slumber,
Forever mourning, and reaching,
for that green light,
A love he knew that was never meant to be his."
Things we cannot have. Hurt the most. Thank you for sharing the excellent poetry,
Coyote

I'm not much of a poet, but I liked your poem, Scarlet. I like your choice of words and you seem to have a good flow to your writing. For me, poems can often be flowery and overdone...I get lost in the fancy words and end up grasping for what the poet was trying to communicate. I have none of that here, and it is like a breath of fresh air.

One point I kind of stumbled at was "A beauty behold, ..." Was this meant to be "A beauty BEHELD, ..."?

You communicate Jay Gatsby's journey very well. I look forward to reading more of your work.
