Maturity is for the Birds

Maturity is for the Birds

A Poem by Michael G. Smith
"

Again with life and bird analogies.

"

Maturity is for the birds

I heard the vultures gossip

Over sinews and crunchy bones

At the time it seemed almost prophetic

When I saw the crows

Coming down

For leftovers

Ravenous joining fun

Over spirits and fine innards

The special guest forgotten

And true a nameless victim

But, maturity is for the birds

An attribute only wasted on some

Ok. Will do. :-)
I'm often not so great with allegory, and so don't exactly know what meaning you intended. I used to think that people matured with age, became wiser, abandoning the destructive/bad behavior of earlier years, but I was wrong. As I've now seen with my own eyes, there are some who never improve over time. On a different note, this is the only poem about vultures I've ever seen, except for one I wrote. Nice work, Michael.

Sounds like you tangled with the corporate mother of the united states as we all know heartless and merciless as they pick over our bones

For some reason I imagine this being about older women in a small town who have nothing better to do but gossip and pick the scabs off of the wounded ones.

Great piece.

oh, very deep... "maturity is for the birds", i am intrigue... you give a metaphor with a punch... it made me think that people of today are acting more immature and being mature... and it's a waste when we know already its too late for a change..

Probably their maturity arrives from their affinity to human's greatest fear " Death". This poem is deeply appreciated for taking us to that much avoided territory.

These are one of the poems that arrive out of thin air like the birds.
Very well played analogy--enjoyed the subtle plays back and forth between the different birds and literal and figurative. Effective also because its concise.
