Man is Internet (Artificial Light)

Man is Internet (Artificial Light)

A Poem by Michael G. Smith
"

The internet is taking over our lives.

"

Sailing along on edge
Convenience, forgotfulness
Wayward beliefs once simple
A world supposedly, not flat

Then, tell me...
Why are we falling
Bruised eyes, off peering
Life, living lies
In this thing called internet

Where is hope
Stretched out
In a few ample strokes
What are these answers
Like, Unlike
Are they not, or people

Our future screaming
But I can't hear it
What is it saying
Emotionless, eager, finger button beggar
Through every window out
Leering in petrified desire

For a moment just look away...
At a stack of books
In the corner decorate
Almost higher
Than a
Inch fifty LCD or Plasma

From this...
Are angry shadow ghosts
Childeren fading
Become plastic models
Lose or, die
But hey, It's not you, so it's okay

And anyway, it's in the public
Forum "Right?"
You know “Youtube”
Facebook, Twitter minutes to fame

Let's just roll ourselves upward
Into a corpse of glamour
Turn up the music
Ever louder
Drown out the evil voices
Dancing naked risqué

Sailing off this edge is floating
Within the numb
Bombarded to swallow it all
Red or blue rainbows upon our tongues
A bitter world of pill
Worshiping the drug

Or be bulimic
Pretend to have faith
Purge at end of day
Whisper “I'm sorry” forgiveness
Pray, while continue falling
Dream comforts night

Then, begin a morning
Off alarms
On Pods,Pads and back
To artificial light

One last question
Do you think from where Steve Jobs is at
That he truly cares...
About the newest Apple app

Or does he laugh
Knowing only we can create
The world which surrounds us
Be it round or be it flat
And still it keeps spinning

Steve Jobs from the very beginning knew all about this will happen. Just understand the meaning of the logo he created: an apple partly bitten. That's it, that symbolizes everything that the hypertext world has to offer.

Witty, straightforward stanza. And I love the alarming reality depicted in this piece, Mike.
I like this. :)

Thanks, one of those lines that appears from an unconscious mind.
Interesting dialogue-like delivery. Great to imagine perspective of Steve Jobs.

Love the last two stanzas!
While technology is nice to have, and adds some good things to our lives, it is no substitute for living Life, and thinking our own thoughts...

Hmm... I see what you mean about our thoughts/words being similar. I have a poem regarding this topic as well. I'm a bit more blunt about it (tis my nature...) but overall the same theme about technology and losing ourselves.
I'm a bit old fashioned... don't hang on the internet. We have a finite number of breaths - I want to actually live them :)

Now without him his company is slipping behind Android technology.
Why don't you tell us how you really feel Mike? Love a rant within poetry, if not for the internet though, we'd not be able to read your fine words. It's addictive like everything else, too much of a good thing is excess no matter what it is.....you zapped a bit of religion in this one too, who knows what Steve is thinking, maybe he's still creating apps for those in Heaven.

A mixture. I like to share the knowledge of the spirit world I've learned.
I'm a computer person mainly because of poetry.. but not a phone person...or a tv person...
I envy people who have lots of talents ...art and music...not just one...it gives them a break from mundane affairs.

This is a great rant, Michael. Must be Baby Ricochet's poems are rubbing off on you. The internet does seem to have taken over so much of our lives - I know that we both are having eye problems and that makes life more uncomfortable on top of taking up the bulk of our time. Reading a book once in a while is never a bad idea!
