The Dirty Heroine~

The Dirty Heroine~

A Poem by NoneOfYourBusiness akaKITTY KUTABAREakaCandyPole

Now the dreams they spilled their contents bare

at her naked feet and threadbare pain

empty save for his old hands

that she now realized, could not withstand

her decadent indulgent rain

the basket at her feet, her bane

she smiled and leaned deep in his bruise

her lavender chemise, reused

to dab the stain beneath his chin

she parted her mulberry lips

“I’m so tired of your bones, breaking me apart for prose,

I want a softer life now, please, one without your bleak disease

I’ll even settle for a lie, risk a man and his goodbye

I’ll swallow every bitter pill if you let me wear my human will.”

Now the monster in his beauty fair

inclined his head to her despair

his claw it drew her down a line

against his brutal appetite

he leaned in close, he leaned in hard

to draw his tongue across her scars

he pressed his smile into her palm

her ecstasy therein embalmed

“Princess in your slippered pain, I raise my glass to you, so brave

to come to me adorned in ash, your seduction to entrance

I’ll grant you here a place to sin, where markers blur the soul with skin

where you and I have come at last to be what always meant to pass.”

Now the monster took her fragile wrists

and raised them to their fated twist

and the girl just smiled through pain with poise

and blossoms etched her stone with prose

his eyes of glass pulled her through anguish

into a fable to fall through, to languish

on a bed of moss where violets scream

and a butterfly gives up her tears

“You came back, we knew you would, to this place where they first stood

where they bent to every flame of lash eating down the girl of ash

we knew you’d one day come to pass before the shattered looking glass

and bow to every puzzle edged for sins like this must be avenged.”

Now the girl she stroked the monsters back

as he folded  corners to be packed

her face in profile, sharp as his

her blood a winding trellis, bliss

“What you have given I have held, inside my lute, I am compelled

to return to you the letter sealed, the secret opened to be healed.”

and the story in his hand unfolded, his origami soul emboldened

but she just shook her head in grief, grief that hinted  plush relief

“Monster mine, oh monster fair, rarest faun to wear my stain

I have come into my own at last, did you ever doubt my heart’s contrast

and now that I am on my knees, will Pandora come with keys

to unlatch my blood from wounded bliss, to unleash my dirty heroine?”

A moment rare and undefined

a faun, a girl, a moon aligned

a sword in stone, a culture’s blood

a woman, a Cadillac, a smoking gun

driving down a body bare

a road unwinding

for

her

to flame

the stain

what a game

what a price

to pay

to play . . . .

You are a great storyteller Selene..you give us an imagery with your words which is so very lucid, and you write with such vigor and vibrancy. This was very fast paced..and there were a lot of things happening at a time, only you could have executed this well..:)

I remember this one... I have no words worthy to describe the edge on which you stand, sharp and emboldened...

when you write like this, I weep both sorrow and joy...

and I wouldn't have it any other way

You have a real gift of infusing your poems with voice. As I read, I can hear the narration. It’s like a movie script, an opium-laced, phantasmagorical assemblage of dreamscapes and nightmares, light and dark.

Your poems make me think of Kris Kuksi’s artwork, particularly his sculptures. One of my favorites is The Deadly Sins, a close-up of which can be seen here:

I find both your writing and his art to be flush with so much wonder, mystery, and vice. At once, the senses feel overloaded; and yet, satiated in a strange and unknowing way. You touch some deeper part of us that has been unable to find its voice, and we yearn to hear more.

I don’t know. There’s a beautiful darkness within which we all find comfort, and you seem to have embraced it so eloquently within your words.

TAO
It's becoming rare for me to witness time stopping; it usually happens in moments of despair, or either extreme of betting against the house, win or lose. Reading this, though, time stopped.

Were my mother not such a...fanatic...during my childhood, I would have liked for her to read me something like this, to send me to sleep with something that would ensorcell my dreams and give me something to wonder at upon waking.

A moment rare and undefined
a faun, a girl, a moon aligned
a sword in stone, a culture’s blood
a woman, a Cadillac, a smoking gun
driving down a body bare
a road unwinding
for
her
to flame
the stain
what a game
what a price
to pay
to play . . . .

I liked the way the poem seemed to unravel at the end (best way I can seem to describe what I'm seeing). For the time there was no time, I was truly, truly lost and was happy to be. Beautiful read, Ms. Selene.
