Reflections of an Echo

inspired by the Roman Poet Ovid

alone she sits beside the lake

her captured reflection

appearing in the water

memories return in echoed silence

of the hurt assailed upon her heart

her cries reverberating

in the tonality of his voice

and the finality of his words

her tears fall to the water

in echoed rings

of salvation lost

for she had pined away until

nothing was left but a reflection

and a repeated voice

that cried in the night

why, why, why, why, ....

and her name was echo

Author's Note

shallimarRose
This piece was inspired by the poet Ovid. In the book Metamorphoses the Roman Poet Ovid combines two ancient legends, the legend of Echo the mountain nymph
and Narcissus, a young hunter who falls in love with his own reflection.
The story is told in Book III of the Metamorphoses and is the first time the two legends had been combined. It tells the story of a talkative nymph who although a chatterbox, she had no other use of language but could repeat only the last words out of many." She falls in love with Narcissus, whom she catches sight of when he is chasing frightened deer into his nets. She hides from him but eventually Echo's presence is revealed to Narcissus, who, after a humorous yet tragic scene, rejects her love. Echo wastes away, until she remains nothing but a voice.... (an echo) that can be heard by all......

The imagery of this poem played itself in my mind like a movie theater and the emotion of sadness, longing, and painful memories could be felt through every carefully conceived word. J'adore as usual! - Ian
