Shields of Black

Shields of Black

A Poem by Althea Tremaine
"

On a friend's death. This is a re-post.

"

Shields of Black

Shields of black linger

Over your closed eyes…

The light reflects off—

Illuminates the sky.

Your gentle eyes, never to be seen

Through the shields of black

As you sleep and dream.

I look down on your eyes

Just to see my reflection…

Not your eyes, those dark pools of affection.

Pain and sorrow contaminate the air

Like a thick, humid fog

Made of tears and despair.

I choke on the words

That were never spoken,

Looking back on the days

When our lives were not broken.

But those dark shields

Remain in their place,

Hiding those eyes

That have fallen from grace.

I look in your eyes

Just to see my own pain,

The tears for your health,

Shed out only in vain.

Memories of smiles

Playing on those dark shields;

Bright sunsets on mountains

And dawns in the fields…

But your eyes are closed—

There will be no more laughs,

Just the hope of the day

When we both will cross paths.

My goodbye is insincere

As I let my tears flow…

I know no relief

In just letting you go.

God this is so nice such tender sweet words i love to hear, this is so passionate sad writing
Pain and sorrow contaminate the air
Like a thick, humid fog
Made of tears and despair.
I look in your eyes
Just to see my own pain,
The tears for your health,
Shed out only in vain.
Bright sunsets on mountains
And dawns in the fields
But your eyes are closed-
There will be no more laughs
this is so great ,oh life oh death how cruel ,when you strike ,eyes go to sleep ,there will be no laughs
they will not see the rainbow,,dawn or sweet colors of dusk
they go to long sleep, there will be no laughs for its the end,how sad
this is very strong sad writing, and you do wonderfully here

You can feel time stop in this poem - it's a moment, a waiting, no breath is taken - you can't let go. I myself have never lost someone; this poem shows me just how hard it's going to be when I do. I like how you refer to a "contamination", which contradicts the idea that tears are cleansing. These tears aren't; they're the realization, too late, of lost time, lost words, lost chances.... Such well-penned emotion and images here. Thank you for the read.

A very well penned, beautiful yet sad poem. A very profound expression-
"Just to see my reflection
Not your eyes, those dark pools of affection.
Pain and sorrow contaminate the air"

Sad. I know how you feel. In death there is never truly a threshold you pass where one truly "let's' go". It's simply a test in time and emotions. Till the seconds between thoughts of that love one become longer, and life is allowed to go on.
