We Are Who We Are.

We Are Who We Are.

A Poem by sonnie ibadah
"

“As you know, madness is like gravity...all it takes is a little push.” ― The Joker- Heath Ledger

"

In the midst of the darkened tunnel,
Where the end is uncertain as the beginning is elusive,
We find the truth,
Not what we thought it to be,
Not what we wanted it to be,
But what it is;
                 cold, extemporaneous, brutal.
Candor is nothing but a shadow.
A mere delusion of grandeur.

But being the sons of our fathers,
We cover our eyes.
Not so we can’t see the truth, no.
So we can elude it with our own versions of reality.

We are soldiers who’ve never gone to war,
Sailors who’ve never boarded a ship
Kings who’ve never seen a throne,
Yet we know of the battles fought,
Know of warring and winning.

...Or so we claim...

“But shouldn’t we make it through, to make it true?”
We ask our host at the totalitarian party.
“Oh, we don’t do that here anymore,”
They say with a humorless plastic smile.
“Please, leave your verity by the door”

And as we join the brainwashed crowd,
and try to down the insipid cocktail of the supposition--
that the world is a just beautiful place,
Something does not feel right,
And no, it’s not the air of melancholy filling the night.
But the crowd at the masquerade shrieking, “Aren’t you an awful sight!”

We look down at our bony limbs,
clad in unpaid bills and suicide notes,
“But is wasn’t meant to be pretty,” We reply,
Because the TRUTH rarely is.

“Yes," they say. "But why dress like a lost crow when such spectacular insights LIE underneath?”
Underneath?
Underneath?
Do they mean beneath our scarred skin and frail bones?
Or aching psyche and plague ridden souls?

Surely, they do see the crippling truth that there is no such thing as
perfection, right?

Their humorless laughter pierce the silence,
And we can sense the impending violence.
The light from the dying moon fades,
replaced by a vision of grotesque dark abyss
“You see nothing!”
“You know nothing!” they chant.

But we are awake … awaken …WOKE?
We know the truth!

“The truth?" They mock. "Then why are you here?”

oh my.....heavy head my friend! lots of philosophical thought and truth exploration in this one .. love it! the i especially like the "peeling of layers" effect that the repetition in V8 give me .. finding myself in a tunnel with an uncertain end to it and an elusive beginning is genius i say ... simply genius .. so there i am standing still without beginning nor end .. in the dark .. and the brutal truth of my "self" is there to shock me .. this is a depressing poem that begs some relief and we get it in the couplet before your closing line .. whew! ;) and the sarcasm and irony in that last line is killer ... thanks for sharing this exploration into the deep ... reading has woke me up .. ;) and its early here .. 3 AM .. love and peace on ya!

Thank you, thank you, thank you! i'm glad you liked it :)
I love the probing nature of your poem . . . not so much saying how it is, but suggesting that we dig down to find what we find. In my experience, we spend a fair amount of life wrapped up in illusions & then at some point we face the hard cold truths of life. This poem reminds me of coming to that point & how it's not bad or ugly, but just confusing & messy to sort thru the illusions as the truths are hammering down with new insights! Very powerful gut-inspired writing (((HUGS))) Fondly, Margie

Heaps of truth, piles of wisdom. So many unique phrases and awakenings. Saw that on the news feed. I had to stop and check. Pleasantly empowered.

You are welcome.....
Just pop off to war son you'll be back in a month. Famous words as millions perished.
You would think no one in their right mind would want any war after that, but alas no.
Sometimes we become a bit flippant to the people who gave us freedom, maybe we don't have to think about it, so we don't. Remembrance Sunday is coming up, the time when politicians who generally cause wars get to shine.

Couldn't have said it better myself. The ugly truth we all chose to ignore. Thanks for reading
There is much depth in this writing. It truly makes you pause and think. We are soldiers that have never gone to war". That really stuck with me. I consider myself fortunate that I have not had to say goodbye to sons called up to fight a war inflicted on the nation by politicians. I consider myself fortunate that I have not received the news that sons or daughters have been killed in action in a foreign land. I have not walked in the shoes of those who have gone before, Your poem is timely as my thoughts at present are on Remembrance Sunday which will soon be with us. There is so much more that I could say, especially when it comes to truth. You have covered a huge amount of ground here. Well written and so thought provoking.

You say you are just a girl > Are you ???

This (to me) reads of a person with experiences of life found in someone older

Hahaa, i guess i'm an old soul. Thank you for your wonderful review :)
I read the depth within your words and was spoken two ways to me. I saw a war of ones self lingering within there own mind of troubled limbs. I have to say that because at one time I did suffer with dark shadows but overcame. But there is also a sense of the wars fought all over the world and many not know what that battlefield is like they only assume. Very deeply said I enjoyed old friend:)
