Right Before Our Eyes

Right Before Our Eyes

A Poem by Staci Brown
"

a new legend is born... a tribute to Josh Hamilton

"

Wisps of cotton hung with ease
Upon a palette of Azure ocean
Slowly, quietly, fading into twilight
In total contrast to the field below
This hallowed ground became charged again
    with whispered echoes of men
Who once worked this land
And the electrified cheers of those heard
    round the world this evening

All eyes focused of those able to watch
Ears attentive with radios in hand
We all shared a common bond this night
Men, women, and children
Religions, politics, even wars were swept aside
As we witnessed with labored breath
    and hearts-racing
Right before our eyes
    a new legend being born

Teacher and student reunited
In this new time honored
    midsummer classic
One young man, once fallen from grace
Intent on breaking a record
With a solid pop to the sweet spot
The long ball soared
thru a humid New York night
Not the subway as hoped
but 514 feet at the wall

Twenty-eight homers
with two point three miles of total distance
First round record
A fitting tribute
To a stadium about to be abandoned

I'll never forget this night
Stored with other diamond memories
When I watched one of the greats
Bound for the Hall of Fame
Hitting the long ball...

I love this - Such powerful imagery and word use. You create such beautiful images with your language. The first line, "Wisps of cotton hung with ease / Upon a palette of Azure ocean" immediately set the standards for the beautiful, vivid poem that would follow. I particularly enjoyed the second stanza, and how it focuses on the simplicity of a game, and how even war is pushed aside for it. Great job! (:

Cool! This was a fun poem to read. Your style and word choice really made it sound all mystical. ^^ I think that's really cool. All the images definitely fit the scenes of a baseball game. How exciting! And what was better was the images of harmony and even friendship. ;) *sigh* America's pasttime just does that, I'm sure. lol

Lovely poem you've got here. Thank you for sharing it with me. :)
