Watcher's Lament

Watcher's Lament

A Poem by SpeedyHobbit Armstrong
"

A poem about a person with an unfortunate proclivity for attracting trouble and the tendency to discern more than is good for her happiness

"

Complacency.

Cantering unchecked.

They bustle like ants. Like drones. No mind of their own. Working. Playing. Treading the well-beaten, comfortable trail.

They do not want what is unfamiliar. They take no chances. It's too risky. Too much to lose? Do they know what greater loss still they will face?

No. Of course not.

It's unfamiliar. It's not safe. In fact… it's dangerous.

It goes against everything they have learned about what is good for them.

It would be a violation of their personal safety.

Too big for them.

It's so not worth these grim stakes.

Why gamble it all for an ideal?

Surely if it is where it is, it deserves to be there. It worked for it and got it.

The end justifies the means, right?

So long as it doesn't affect me, why interfere? Why work against it?

Everything could be lost. Why risk it?

They fear to face the dark.

They fear a lack of foothold. They fear a storm.

The storm is upon them.

Them.

Oblivious.

Self-absorbed.

All seems to fall.

But they do not realize. Or maybe they just don't care.

Why should they, though? It's not their life. It has nothing to do with them.

All that matters is their own world.

Well, it is comfortable…

This is really good. Though some of the lines can be separated into two lines.
Them.
Oblivious.
Self-absorbed.
All seems to fall.
