THE SILENCE OF A RIVER

THE SILENCE OF A RIVER

A Poem by SAYED THANGAL
"

How pathetic now to see the rivers that once flowed with its crystal water and purity.

"
Where are the out stretched sand fields

Once the boundaries on both sides,

Where we enjoyed the sunset.

Where's gone the green crystal water

The elixir of life for thousands !

Where are the fisher men

Who lived by the river and made it lively.

Where are the barges and loaded boats

That sailed day and night !

Where  the river side tea shops

The resort of all the passers by

Where are the tasty fishes

Those that to guests once served

Where are the ferry boats and ferry men

Once the only means to cross the river.

Where are the lovely sights and scenes

By which moved the poets their pen !

Why are you silent, silent as though in meditation

Who left the deep scars on your face

Who made your lap muddy and sluggish

Who dumped the wastes on your shores

Tell me , why you are exploited time and again

Where's the beauty millions centuries enjoyed

Where's gone the smile once seen on your face

You seem  sad , unable to utter a word

Stare at every one ; without feeling , without passion.

Do you  recognize us, the sad hearts

That you once consoled

Your stare but fills us with fear and feelings dreary

That the glory past is beyond recovery.

You are welcome.
I find the questions evocative and the imagery excellent. However I must wonder why the sentences are split with a '?' symbol when they should be, rightfully, at the end of the line or lines? It is not too distracting but it is incorrect and odd. But, this IS poetry and unless you're going for a particular form and precision then almost anything is permissible (or so I have inferred from a small sampling of the centuries of works that are lumped into this corpus).

Progress unfortunately, it has it's downsides...I like all the questions this represents, not crazy about all the question marks though, but that's just me. Nonetheless enjoyed sayed.

I didn't understand what you mean here, please explain,....
What an ode to much that is lost and irreplacable, Sayed... To hear in different countries that some specific rivers are contaminated beyond repair in our lifetimes is a disgrace, another shameful gift we leave to our descendents...

"Your stare but fills us with fear and feelings dreary
That the glory past is beyond recovery."

Your portrayal of past activities, lively and healthy ones, with so many questions throughout the poem brings home the message in a very human way.
