Many people have said that learning English is among the hardest languages to learn. People say that because of the many idioms and slang words used being English speakers. Some people say that learning to speak Thai is also difficult to master, but for very different reasons.

 

Many Rules in English Don’t Apply to Thai.

 

Thai grammar doesn’t follow fixed rules in many cases. For instance, English verbs have tenses that let the speaker or reader know whether the verb is referring to the present, or the future, or the past. There is no past tense in the Thai language which is confusing to some and impossible for others to correctly communicate a thought to a Thai.

As already mentioned, there is no past tense in Thai, but there are also no object pronouns and no verb conjugations to learn like in English (i.e. go, went, gone, etc.). With five different tones for each Thai word, it is somewhat difficult for English speakers to grasp the individual’s meaning. Many English slang words or idioms don’t translate properly in Thai.

 

“Curiosity killed the cat” and “That concert was the bomb” are English idioms that can’t be expressed in Thai without some major adjustments or explanations.
